doxycycline
Malaria is a parasite that is transmitted by the mosquito insect. Once bitten by a mosquito it may transfer the parasite into your blood stream. Doxycycline works by interfering with the reproduction of the malaria parasite and therefore killing it before it infects you.
Doxycycline is more than 95% effective in preventing malaria and this is increased when used with other measures to prevent you getting bitten by a mosquito, for example a DEET spray.
You must take one Doxycycline capsule 1-2 days before travelling to high-risk areas. This ensures protection before travelling. It should be continued daily during travel and for 4 weeks after you leave the high-risk area. One capsule should be taken with food and with a full glass of water.
Like any medicine that is taken, Doxycycline can potentially cause side effects or have no side effects at all. This includes nausea, vomiting and headaches. It can also cause photosensitivity reactions and skin rashes. Hence it is advised to use sun block to reduce the risk of photosensitive reactions.

You should avoid getting pregnant while taking this medicine as it may put your unborn baby at risk.
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions or on particular medicines. For this reason, it is very important you declare your full medical history to our Click Doctors via our online consultations so that a proper judgement can be made on its safety.

Do not take Doxycycline:
  • If you are allergic to its active ingredient or any other of its ingredients.
  • If there is a chance of pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding
  • If you have symptoms (attend your local sexual health clinic)
  • While drinking alcohol
For full information on how to take, side effects and precautions, it is important that you carefully read the patient information leaflet.
