Hana is a progestogen-only pill that contains a progestogen hormone.
Hana is a newer type of POP containing desogestrel that stops ovulation most of the time. This means that an egg is stopped from being released from the ovaries for fertilisation to occur.
Hana is more than 99% effective. This means that less than 1 in 100 women who use the progestogen-only pill for contraception will get pregnant in one year.
One Hana tablet must be taken within 3 hours of the same time each day. Always follow the instructions that come with your pill packet.
If you start the pill on day 1 to 5 of your menstrual cycle (the first 5 days of your period), it will work straight away and you will be protected against pregnancy. You will not need any additional contraception.

If you have a short menstrual cycle, you'll need additional contraception, such as condoms, until you have taken the pill for 2 days.

If you start the progestogen-only pill on any other day of your cycle, you won't be protected from pregnancy straight away and will need additional contraception until you've taken the pill for 2 days.
Hana is generally well tolerated and side effects are rare. These include:
• acne
• breast tenderness and breast enlargement
• an increased or decreased sex drive
• mood changes
• headache and migraine
• nausea or vomiting
• small fluid-filled sacs called cysts on your ovaries – these are usually harmless and disappear without treatment
• stomach upset
• weight gain

These side effects are most likely to occur during the first few months of taking Hana, but they generally improve over time and should stop within a few months.
Missing pills or taking the pill alongside other medicines can reduce the effectiveness. In this case, it is important you speak to a doctor or pharmacist for further advise.

If you vomit, within two hours of taking a Hana tablet, take another one.

For full information on how to take, side effects and precautions, it is important that you carefully read the patient information leaflet.
