norethisterone
Norethisterone is a type of progestogen hormone which prevents your uterus (womb) from shedding or getting rid of its lining as it usually does when menstruation begins. This results in no menstruation.
Norethisterone will almost always delay your period if taken as directed. The majority of women will have no bleeding at all whilst some will have some light bleeding.
One Norethisterone tablet should be taken three times daily, starting three days before you are expecting your period. Menstruation usually follows within three days of finishing the treatment.

Norethisterone tablets can be used to delay a period for a maximum of 17 days and should not be used to delay your period more than once every 6 months.
Like any medicine that is taken, Norethisterone can potentially cause side effects or have no side effects at all. These include nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, reduced sex drive and/ or headaches. Rarely, it can also cause worsening of some chronic conditions or interact with some medicines. Therefore it is important to declare all of your medical history via our online consultations so our Click Doctors can assess the risks.
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions or on particular medicines. For this reason, it is very important you declare your full medical history to our Click Doctors via our online consultations so that a proper judgement can be made on its safety.

Norethisterone should not be taken if:
  • You are taking the combined oral contraceptive pill
  • You have a history of blood clots
  • Your are pregnant or breast-feeding
For full information on how to take, side effects and precautions, it is important that you carefully read the patient information leaflet.
