sumatriptan 50mg
The causes of a migraine headache is still unknown but it is thought to be temporary changes to blood supply to parts of the brain. Sumatriptan is similar to a natural chemical found in the brain called serotonin. It works by acting on certain sites in the brain to reverse this temporary changes making the symptoms of a migraine less severe.
Studies suggest that Sumatriptan is effective at treating pain, nausea and photophobia (sensitivity to light) associated with migraine. 26-39% of patients experience a reoccurrence of headache after taking Sumatriptan however, another dose may be taken after two hours to relieve this.
Our Click Doctors advise that Sumatriptan is taken as early as possible after the onset of a migraine attack. However, it is still effective at whatever stage of the attack it is taken. The recommended dose of oral Sumatriptan is a 50mg tablet. Some patients may require 100mg. A tablet should be swallowed whole with water.

If you respond to the first dose but the symptoms recur, a second dose may be given provided that there is a minimum interval of two hours between the two doses. Patients who do not respond to the first dose of Sumatriptan should not take a second dose for the same attack. In such cases please contact your GP for further advice on alternative treatments.
Like all medicines, taking Sumitriptan can cause potential side effects but these may not necessarily be experienced. These include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, feeling hot or cold, aching muscles and shortness of breath.

Some experience pain, heaviness, pressure or tightness of the chest, throat or other parts of the body. You may also get numbness, tingling or other unusual sensations. If this is not short lived and continues or becomes severe, you must seek urgent medical help.
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions or on particular medicines. For this reason, it is very important you declare your full medical history to our Click Doctors via our online consultations so that a proper judgement can be made on its safety.
