Warticon is an antiviral solution or cream that contains the active ingredient podophyllotoxin used to treat anogenital warts. It can be used on soft warts within a small area to burn away the affected tissue. If your warts cover an area larger than a 2 pence coin or postage stamp, we may not be able to prescribe you Warticon.
Warticon is used on soft anogenital warts appearing on or close to the penis or externally around the vagina. It is indicated for use on individual warts or small clusters of warts and not for wider areas. The podophyllotoxin in Warticon works by preventing wart cells dividing and spreading, which over time will kill the wart and can prevent it returning.
It will prevent the growth and spread of warts, as well as helping them fade. Most people find that their warts disappear after 12 weeks. Others find that they need to apply the cream for a longer time. It is unlikely for the warts to reappear after treatment.
One treatment course of Warticon consists of applying the solution twice daily every 12 hours for 3 days, and then no application for the following 4 days. Repeat the cycle if any warts remain after 7 days. You may apply up to 4 cycles in a row yourself (up to 4 weeks) but if any warts persist after this you should consult your doctor.
Wash the affected area with soap and water, then dry completely. Always use a new applicator to apply the Warticon. Dip the loop end of the applicator into the Warticon. If you have many small warts in one area or a large wart, use the spatula end of the applicator.
Apply the solution to a wart until it is covered and allow it to dry. Avoid getting it on healthy skin as this may irritate it or cause pain. Repeat for each wart and allow solution or cream to dry before it touches other skin or clothing
Wash your hands thoroughly after using Warticon.
Like all medicines, some people using Warticon may experience side effects while others may not. These include skin irritation, rash, soreness or ulceration around the areas where you apply the solution
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions or on particular medicines. For this reason, it is very important you declare your full medical history to our Click Doctors via our online consultations so that a proper judgement can be made on its safety.
