Xenical is the brand name of 120mg capsules of the active ingredient Orlistat. It is a medication used to aid weight loss alongside a low calorie diet and exercise. Xenical reduce the number of calories your body absorbs from the fat you eat.
Xenical works by preventing around one third of all the fat in the meals you eat from being absorbed by your body. This fat will remain undigested and pass out of your body in your stools.
If taken correctly for 12 weeks, alongside a low-calorie, low-fat diet and regular exercise, most people who take Xenical can expect to lose around 5% of your original body weight.
Swallow Xenical 120mg capsule whole with water three times a day with each main meal. It should be taken immediately before, during a meal or up to one hour after a meal. Orlistat should be taken in addition to a nutritional, low-calorie diet low in fat. You must also try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercising.

If you do not lose weight after 12 weeks of taking Xenical, stop taking it and contact your doctor for further advice.
Xenical will only take effect when used when your body is digesting dietary fat. Therefore, if you miss a main meal or have a meal containing no fat, you will not need to take a capsule.
Like any medicine that is taken, Xenical can potentially cause side effects or have no side effects at all. These include fatty or oily stools, needing the toilet urgently, passing stools frequently, oily discharge from your rectum, flatulence, stomach pain and headache.
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions or on particular medicines. For this reason, it is very important you declare your full medical history to our Click Doctors via our online consultations so that a proper judgement can be made on its safety.

Do not use Xenical:
  • If you are allergic to its active ingredients or any of its other ingredients
  • If you have chronic malabsorption syndrome
  • If you have cholestasis
  • If you are breast-feeding
The use of an additional contraceptive method is recommended to prevent possible failure of oral contraception that could occur in case of severe diarrhoea.

For full information on how to take, side effects and precautions, it is important that you carefully read the patient information leaflet.
