A migraine is typically a moderate or severe headache felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Symptoms can also include nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light or sound.
Migraine is a common health condition, affecting around 1 in 5 women and around 1 in 15 men. They usually begin in early adulthood and come in bouts throughout the year.
The precise cause is unknown but it is suggested that there is an underlying genetic cause since half of those who suffer from migraines have a relative with the condition. There are some reported triggers such as stress, and particular food and drinks such as cheese and alcohol.
