The most widely used method to check if you're a healthy weight is body mass index (BMI). BMI is a measure of whether you're a healthy weight for your height. For most adults, a BMI of 25-29.9 means you are overweight. A BMI of more than 30 means you are obese. Alternatively, waist size is a better indication of fat distribution and whether or not you are carrying excess fat.
Potential complications of being overweight include type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, some types of cancer (e.g. bowel and breast) and stroke. Other problems arising from being overweight is depression, and arthritis of joints (e.g. knees)
Weight gain is generally caused by eating more calories than you burn off through physical activity. The excess calories from sugary and fatty foods are stored by the body as fat. There are also some health conditions that can contribute to weight gain such as an underactive thyroid gland. If you experience any unusual symptoms or feel there may be underlying cause, it is suggested to contact your GP to discuss this further.
Aside from reducing calorie intake and taking up activities such as walking and swimming, our Click Doctors recommend the use of the medicine called Orlistat (generic Xenical), which prevents approximately 1/3 of the fat you eat from being digested. Instead this is released into your stools.
Our clinicians can only prescribe weight loss treatments if your BMI is above 30 (or 28 if you have risk factors such as diabetes). Our online questionnaire will also clarify further if Orlistat is suitable for you.
