A period is part of the menstrual cycle when a woman bleeds from her vagina for a few days. For most women with regular cycles, this happens every 28 days or so, but it is common for periods to be less or more frequent in some women. Otherwise some women suffer from extremely painful periods that on some occasions are unbearable.
Period pain happens when the muscular walls of the womb contracts (tightens). Most women experience mild regular contractions throughout the month that are not felt but during their period, the wall of the womb contracts harder to help the womb shed its lining as part of a normal period.
Yes on many occasions it is entirely normal. It is not however, known why some women have more painful periods then others. Less commonly some medical conditions may be the underlying cause to extremely painful periods. If you are concerned or have any other abnormal symptoms, we suggest speaking to your GP.
