Genital herpes is a very common sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by a virus called herpes simplex virus (HSV). It can be passed on through sexual contact. The virus can enter through the thin lining or small breaks in the skin of the mouth, vagina, back passage, urethra (tube where urine comes out from), and under the foreskin.
Many people have no symptoms when infected. However, some people with genital herpes will only get mild symptoms with a few getting very painful symptoms. These include flu-like symptoms, lower back pain going down to legs and groin, pain on passing urine, discharge and/ or pain of the genitals and blisters.
You can be checked over as soon as you develop any signs or symptoms.
It is not always essential to have treatment if you develop genital herpes as it sometimes clears with time. However, treating it from the start can help reduce the time that outbreak lasts and help the healing process as well reduce the risk of spreading it to others.
The antiviral medicine called Aciclovir is available and helps stop the virus multiplying or growing so that your immune system is given the required time to get the infection under control. In cases where the infection is recurrent, a suppression course for a period of 3 months is available.
